Randal J. Kirk
Senior Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Kirk founded Third Security, LLC in March 1999 and has served as its Chief Executive Officer since that time. In 1984, Mr. Kirk co-founded General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. and served as Chairman of the Board prior to the 1998 sale of the company. Mr. Kirk also co-founded King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in 1993. Additionally, in 1996 Mr. Kirk founded and became Chairman of the Board of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. (previously traded on NASDAQ prior to its acquisition by Shire plc in 2007) and was President and Chief Executive Officer between October 2001 and April 2007.
Mr. Kirk has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Clinical Data, Inc. since 2002 and as Chairman of the Board since 2004, as a member of the Board of Directors of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: HALO) since May 2007, as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation since February 2008 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyntellect, Inc. since September 2008. Mr. Kirk served as a member of the Board of Directors of Scios, Inc. (previously traded on NASDAQ prior to its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson) between February 2000 and May 2002.
In 2009, Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine appointed Mr. Kirk to serve on the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors. Prior to that honor, he served as Rector of the Radford University Board of Visitors and also on the University's Foundation board. In July 2006, Mr. Kirk was chosen by the governor to sit on the Virginia Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates. A year later, he accepted a position on the Board of Directors for the Virginia University Research Partnership.
Mr. Kirk began his professional career in the private practice of law. He holds a B.A. in Business from Radford University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
Robert Patzig
Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer
Mr. Patzig joined Third Security upon the company's inception. Mr. Patzig's responsibilities include identifying and researching new investment opportunities for Third Security and its funds, securities valuation and portfolio management. Mr. Patzig is a Director of the Virginia Biotechnology Association, a non-profit industry advocacy group, a member of the Virginia Tech English Department Distinguished Alumni Board and a member of the Virginia Tech School of Business Finance Advisory Board. Mr. Patzig has served as Chairman of the Board of Intrexon Corporation and Cyntellect, Inc. and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Synchrony, Inc. Mr. Patzig served as the head of the Investment Committee for Howe and Rusling, Inc., a registered investment advisor, from 2001 until its sale in 2006. Prior to the formation of Third Security, Mr. Patzig served as Director of Market Research and Analysis at GIV Holdings, Inc. and Director of Research Services at General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. Mr. Patzig received a B.A. in Philosophy and English and a M.A. in English from Virginia Tech.
Marcus Smith
Senior Managing Director and General Counsel
Mr. Smith joined Third Security upon its inception and has since been principally responsible for legal matters and transaction execution. In connection with his work for Third Security, Mr. Smith has served in various other capacities, including as Secretary and member of the Board of Managers of ECDS, LLC from September 2002 until June 2008 and of its predecessor from October 1999 to September 2002. He served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. from August 1996 until April 2004, as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. between 1994 and 1998 and as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of GIV Holdings, Inc. between 1996 and 1998. Previously he was an attorney in the legal departments of The Southland Corporation and Occidental Oil & Gas Corporation. Mr. Smith received B.B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Georgia.
Julian P. Kirk
Managing Director
Mr. Kirk joined Third Security upon its inception and works with several portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds, and is involved with oversight of Third Security's internal operations. He currently also serves as Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of IntelliMat, Inc. In 2001, he served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Biological & Popular Culture, Inc. In 2000, he served as interim president of SFR, LLC and then as Chief Operating Officer of Talkflow Systems, LLC. Mr. Kirk served as Marketing Manager for General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. from 1998 to 1999. Mr. Kirk graduated as an Echols Scholar from the University of Virginia.
Doit L. Koppler II
Managing Director and Treasurer
Mr. Koppler joined Third Security in 2001 and manages the finance function of Third Security and is involved with several portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds. Mr. Koppler currently serves as Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors of Vital Diagnostics Holding Corp. Mr. Koppler served as a member of the Board of Directors of IntelliMat, Inc. from November 2006 to July 2008. Prior to joining Third Security, Mr. Koppler served as Vice President and Controller of GIV Holdings, Inc. from 1992-2000. From 1987-1992, he was a Manager in the audit practice of Ernst & Young LLP. Mr. Koppler is a Certified Public Accountant and a Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He also holds Series 7 and Series 66 securities registrations. Mr. Koppler received a B.S. in Accounting from Salem International University.
Lisa M. Moose
Managing Director
Ms. Moose joined Third Security at its inception and is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining Third Security's information systems. She previously worked with General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. and its holding company in developing and maintaining information systems. Prior to joining GIV, she worked with Hoechst AG/USA from 1984 to 1995 in developing engineering and business systems for global manufacturing. Ms. Moose received a B.A. in Business Administration from Mary Baldwin College.
Jeffrey T. Perez
Managing Director and Associate General Counsel
Mr. Perez joined Third Security in 2007 and evaluates the intellectual property of potential investments of Third Security's managed investment funds. Additionally, Mr. Perez works with Third Security portfolio companies in evaluating and developing their intellectual property. Prior to joining Third Security, Mr. Perez practiced law in the area of intellectual property with the law firm of Hunton & Williams LLP in Washington, D.C. His previous work involved client counseling, litigation experience, agreement work, opinion drafting and patent procurement. He received his B.S. from Cornell University and his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law.
Theodore J. Fisher
Managing Director and Associate General Counsel
Mr. Fisher joined Third Security in 2003 and focuses on mergers, acquisitions and other corporate transactions, governance, securities and regulatory issues. Mr. Fisher also serves in the following capacities: Secretary, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of Pinnacle Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of Vital Diagnostics Holding Corp.; member of the Board of Directors of IntelliMat, Inc.; Secretary and member of the Board of Managers of ECDS, LLC; and member of the Advisory Board of NewVa Capital Partners, LP. Prior to joining Third Security, Mr. Fisher practiced law in the areas of capital markets and mergers and acquisitions at the law firm of Hunton & Williams LLP in Richmond, Virginia. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his J.D. from the William & Mary School of Law.
Clifton R. Herndon II
Managing Director and Controller
Mr. Herndon joined Third Security upon its inception and serves as the firm's Controller. Mr. Herndon focuses on audit, internal control, financial operations and technical accounting issues for Third Security and portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds. Mr. Herndon served as Vice President and Controller of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. from August 2004 until August 2007 shortly after its acquisition by Shire plc, during which time he was not employed by Third Security. Mr. Herndon has also served as the Director of Financial Operations for Biological & Popular Culture, Inc., Assistant Controller for GIV Holdings, Inc. from November 1997 through December 31, 1998, Assistant Controller and Cost Accounting Manager with Long-Airdox Company, a manufacturer of mining equipment, from May 1996 to November 1997 and Manager in the audit practice of Ernst & Young LLP from October 1994 to May 1996. Mr. Herndon began his career with Ernst & Young LLP in July 1989. Mr. Herndon received a B.B.A. in Accounting from Marshall University.
Matthew B. Crisp
Managing Director
Mr. Crisp joined Third Security in 2004 and focuses on corporate development for portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds. Mr. Crisp serves as a member of the Board of Directors of IntelliMat, Inc., Synchrony, Inc., and Cyntellect, Inc. Formerly, Mr. Crisp worked closely with NewVa Capital Partners, LP, and served as the Vice President of Finance and Operations and as a member of the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation. Mr. Crisp received a B.B.A. with a major in Finance from Radford University, where he currently serves as a member of the Radford University Board of Visitors, the RU Foundation Board of Directors, and the College of Business and Economics Advisory Board.
Scott R. Horner, Ph.D.
Managing Director
Dr. Horner joined Third Security in 2007 and focuses on assessing the commercial viability and technical merit of potential investments in the biotechnology sector. He also works with many portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds providing business intelligence and operational support, and currently is serving as President and CEO of Pinnacle Pharmaceuticals. Prior to joining Third Security, Dr. Horner served as the Chief Scientific Officer for Pathologics, LLC (now Adarza BioSystems, Inc), an early-stage medical diagnostics company located in Rochester, NY. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry from the State University of New York at Albany, M.S. in Biophysics and Ph.D. in Bioorganic Chemistry from the University of Rochester.
